Can Minoxidil Help You Regrow Your Hair?
Minoxidil, known best under the brand name Rogaine, has been a controversial product since it was first advertised. After many years, however, it’s still one of the top products that people use to prevent thinning hair or stimulate new hair growth. The truth is that not every hair growth product will work for everyone. There are different types of baldness, and they all have different causes, whether you’re male or female. If you’ve gone completely bald as a result of aging, this product may not do much good. However, if you’re a man or woman who has noticed their hair has started to thin or you’ve found bald patches on your scalp, Minoxidil may be the answer you’re looking for to keep the hair you have and help generate new hair growth.
How Does Minoxidil Work?
Some people have a bad experience with Minoxidil because they simply aren’t willing to follow the directions. This product won’t grow your hair back overnight, and it takes weeks for it to really give you the full effect. Even once you’ve started using this product, you may notice hair shedding.
Minoxidil has been used to stimulate hair growth and to slow balding for many years. It’s considered to be most effective for people under 40 years of age, and the earlier you start using it, the more likely you’ll see success. While you may see “baby hair” growth in parts of your scalp that is thinning, Minoxidil will have no effect on a receding hairline. It’s not a quick fix for baldness. Most importantly, after applying it twice a day, you’ll see effects after about four months. If you like the results, then you cannot cease using Minoxidil. Once you stop applying it, your scalp will begin shedding hair again.
How Is Minoxidil Used?
Minoxidil comes in liquid form as a cream or ointment and must be applied directly to your scalp twice a day. If you’re using this product, you should follow the directions that accompany the drug carefully. If you don’t understand any aspect of the instructions, speak with your pharmacist. Do not use more than is recommended, and be careful to only apply it to places you want the hair to grow.
Minoxidil comes with 3 different special applicators that you can use:
- A metered-spray applicator for large scalp areas
- An extender spray applicator for small areas or under the hair
- A rub-on applicator.
The instructions will help you choose which applicator is best for you. Make sure to read all of the warnings on the box and do not apply minoxidil to a sunburned, flaking or irritated scalp.
Encouraging New Hair Growth
Besides using minoxidil, you may also want to complementary methods to help encourage new hair growth. You may want to start taking a biotin supplement, which is essential to strong hair, nails, and skin. You may also try to conceal hair loss with fashion, such as a head wrap or new hat. Hair loss is a personal subject and how you cope with it is a personal decision. Just make sure you are comfortable and well informed so you can make the decision that’s best for you.
